If I understood ur problem correctly :) 

Some of the new cards will not be suppoted by the old X. Even if you
install the nVidia path, won't wrok. Bcoz I need the new version of
Kernel. Butter switch to new version, like MDK9.1 / Slackware 9.1 ...
