I think that the issue is that one CPU can't just mess with the APM interface without the risk of other CPU's getting clobbered. SMP should be compatible with APM once all the other CPUs are shut down.

I have it:
$ ls -l /dev/apm_bios crw-rw---- 1 root root 10, 134 Oct 24 16:59 /dev/apm_bios
But even if I build apm into my Linux kernel, it is not used:
apm: BIOS version 1.2 Flags 0x07 (Driver version 1.16) apm: disabled - APM is not SMP safe
Can XFree86 be configured or built without that /dev/apm_bios need?
Or should I just ignore this?
