  Rotation in Xrandr was never implemented (ie. it isn't expected to
work).   The "nv" driver does support 90 degree rotation at startup
time (not on-the-fly).  From the nv man page:

       Option "Rotate" "CW"

       Option "Rotate" "CCW"
              Rotate  the  display clockwise or counterclockwise.
              This mode is unaccelerated.  Default: no  rotation.

              Note: Option Rotate does not work unless the Resize
              and Rotate extension has been turned off.

You can turn off RandR with:

   Option "RandR" "0"

in the Section "ServerFlags" in the XF86Config file.
