[XFree86] SOLUTION: ATI: no screens available RedHat 9.00 (and other problems)

Hi All,

There have been a lot of questions about an issue with the new XFree86
that comes with RedHat 9.0. Specifically, the driver ignores the
modeline and eithe (a) can't find a working screen (ATI) or (b) can't
drive a non-standard resolution.

Other symptoms are that the Modelines set in XFree86Config are being
ignored.

This issue is in bugzilla and it's marked as resolved. I had the same
problem but was able to find a work around.

Here's what I did.

1 - Go to http://www.xfree86.org/~alanh/drivers/ and get the drivers
specific for your configuration and the XFree86 binary. In my case,
with an ATI card, I downloaded the following files:

    XFree86
    ati_drv.o
    atimisc_drv.o
    r128_drv.o

(These might all not be necessary).

2. Go to /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers and replace the existing
drivers with the ones you just downloaded. You should save the old
ones, probably.

3. Go to /usr/X11R6/bin and replace the copy of XFree86 you find there
with the one you just downloaded.

4. Reboot your machine. In my case, I needed to power down and back up.

That should do it. As soon as my machine came back up it was working
perfectly. The fonts look better too.

Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to help out.

Best,
Paul
