When starting X (via startx), it stalls while loading. My display goes blank (turns off kinda like power saving mode, normally it does that briefly while changing modes and turns back on), and is then locked up. I can't c-a-f1 to get back to the VT, I can't c-a-backspace to quit, I can't do anything but hit c-a-del to reboot, and I don't get my display back until the BIOS boot messages come up. At the end of XFree86.0.log is this: (II) Initializing built-in extension RANDR That is preceeded by a dozen or so lines of other extensions being initialized. There are no other errors, just a couple warnings, one about a font path the other about a missing apm device. This is using the Gentoo Linux xfree package, version 4.3.0-r2. My graphics card is "(--) PCI:*(1:5:0) ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R100 QD [Radeon 7200] rev 1". GCC 2.95.3, Linux kernel 2.4.22, Gentoo XFree drm modules 4.3.0-r6. This all happened just after I installed some new Crucial ram (512MB worth) that I got on warantee replacement. I had had this problem before and it turned out two of my ram modules were toast. While waiting for the 2x256 modules, I've been running on 256mb with no problems. Is it possible the ram slots on my motherboard are toast? Maybe I've got some bad bios settings (though I didn't change anything other than the agp aperture size from 64 to 128 after installing the new ram.) If needed I can send my config and log, but there's nothing unusual about either. The same config worked (I changed agp aperture) with the 256mb of ram, and the log shows no errors - it just stops at the point indicated above. Anyone have some ideas? Thank you in advance. _______________________________________________ XFree86 mailing list XFree86@xxxxxxxxxxx http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
