With Toshibas you can turn the fans off from software, but then you run the risk of overheating. In Linux 2.5/2.6 there's support for changing the CPU speed too. Give that a try. I am no longer subscribed to the list, as you may have guessed. Now that I'm back at school I don't have time to handle the full volume.
