Then its probably due to the video memory clock being at the limit of
what the video memory can accept. Does the same thing happen for an 
attached CRT? 

You might also want to play with the SetMClk option. Though, I've seen
in the past that some large division ratios in the PLL's caused by
this option can play havoc with the memory clock. Also with the 65548
you can't read back the memory clock register settings and so if you
change the memory clock and things go wrong you'll have to either reboot 
the machine or in some way let the BIOS fix up the registers in some way.
Try changing LCD -> CRT -> LCD (Fn-F4?), or suspending the machine. 

Also, while X is running does doing LCD -> CRT -> LCD fix the mouse issue?
If so, trying to figure out what the BIOS does might help...
