I am running XFree86 Version 4.2.0 on a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop with an ATI Rage Mobility M4 video card and a 1600x1200 UXGA LCD display. Occasionally, when switching to a virtual console (CTRL-ALT-F1, CTRL-ALT-F2, etc.) or when attempting to shutdown, the screen will slowly fade to an all white color and the system will become unresponsive. The only way to recover is to perform a hard reset of the machine. I have a friend that is experiencing the same problem and have come across numerous posts on newsgroups and forums from others experiencing this problem as well. However, I have not been able to find a cause or the solution. I have noticed that the problem does not seem to occur when running in the native laptop resolution of 1600x1200. It only occurs when trying to run at a different resolution - in my case, 1280x1024. Unfortunately, I need to be able to run at this lower resolution. I have included what I believe to be the relevant sections of my XF86Config file. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
