Assuming that you're running XFree86-4.x.x Your XF86Config-4 file would be of 
help. If you're running XFree86-3.x.x the file would be XF86Config. 
Check the listed resolutions in the file, making sure they are in decending 
order, that is, highest to lowest. The first listed will be the default and 
then lower resolutions will be virtual.
