Resolution and Dimensions - what is the relation?

Hey all. Thank you for the help on the last post. I now have a GUI on my FreeBSD box. I have gone with KDE(3.0.3).

Now I can run the GUI in 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768 but in all res's but 640x480 I am not able to see the entire screen. I have to pan around with the mouse. I expect this has something to do with the Dimensions vs Resolution relationship. I don't see any place to edit the Resolution in the config file (/root/XF86Config). I edit the screen dimensions by #'ing out the res's I don't want and X fires up just fine. I can't see me living in a 640x480 world! The screen is a 17" CRT capable of 1280x1024 @ 60 Hz Max and 1024x1280 @ 85 Hz optimal. So is the setting I am looking for in the X configuration or in the KDE configuration?

Thank you all. Thus far I am thrilled at the online support. I can't wait for a chance to contribute!

-Jason.
