i don't know what anyone else is going to reply..but,
1. run xf86config...you know everything works, and xf86config is a bit more
detailed. you can pick and choose the things that you want.
2. your video card just may not be able to handle what you want.

Hi,

I am running:

Slackware 8.1 Kernel:2.4.18
Intel i815 Video
XFree86 4.2.0
Sony Multiscan 15SF Monitor

I ran XFree86 -configure, which was successful and created a config file
for me.

PROBLEM: When I startx I can either get 640x480 or 1280x1024...nothing
in between!

When I ctrl/alt/+/- I get a black screen for any resolution other than
1280x1024.

I have tried many different options and suggestions gleaned from the
internet, but so far...no success.

All I want is to run X at 800x600 hi-colour.

Please help!
