The Radeon Mobility 7500 works for me using the 2.4.19-gentoo-r9 kernel.
I enabled the following:
(y) VGA text console
(y) Video mode selection support
(y) Support for framebuffer devices
(y) ATI Radeon Display Support
 
It took several tries, but after a process of elimination this line in
/boot/grub/grub.conf worked:
kernel /boot/bzImage root=/dev/hda5 vga=5
