I checked XF86Config-4, which is the one my RedHat 7.3 uses, and it is ok:

Section "Screen"
 Identifier "Screen0"
 Device "S3 Trio64 (generic)"
 Monitor "Sampo AlphaScan 411"
 DefaultDepth 32
 Subsection "Display"
  Depth 32
  Modes "800x600"
 EndSubSection
 Subsection "Display"
  Depth 16
  Modes "1024x768"
 EndSubSection
 Subsection "Display"
  Depth 8
  Modes "1024x768"
 EndSubSection
EndSection

I always get my monitor turned off, I use Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to exit

I tried startx >& startx.log
