You may still have 1024x768 in the mode line which could cause the problem because X would be creating a virtual screen and be lacking the memory for it... Additionally, I don't recall which distro you have, if it is one which generates 2 config files one for X 3.3.6 and the other for X 4.x.x you might be trying to hack the wrong one. Check whether you are running X 4 or X 3 (check the log - /var/log/XFree86.0.log - where you can also find out which config file is used) or X -version.
