How to avoid expanding to full resolution of laptop display

(I am not sure whether this questions has anything to do with XF86, please
point me into a better direction if it doesn't...)

I am running Linux on a Comaq Presario 2700 laptop, which has a ATI Radeon
M6 graphics chip. My X resolution is 1400x1050, the full display
resolution. Sometimes (e.g. when connecting to an external projector) I
have to reduce the resolution to 1024x768. In this case, the screen is
expanded to the full display size, which looks rather clunky. I would much
prefer having a 1024x768 rectangle in the center of the display.

I haven't found any BIOS option to change this behavior. Under Windows XP,
there is an option in the ATI driver tab that does exactly what I want. Is
there a solution for X, too ?
