i have a PIII 600 with 128meg ram running on a gigabyte GA-6X7+ motherboard, with Debian Potato.
The problem is that i cant get the Xserver to start in more than 16 colors in GNOME. I tried the SVGA server and the S3V one but it does not want to start. I am realy new at Linux comming from win2k. here is the chipset if that will help:
 

CHipset: s3 Trio3D/2X

Memorry 4096 kb

ramdac Generic 8-bit pseudo-color DAC

with 6-bit wide lookup tables or in 6- bit mode

 

The screen is a 14" svga.
