Thanks, but it didn't help the flashing screen...

Thanks for responding Shane.

However, the "NoCompositeSync" option made no difference when I put it in my "/root/XF86Config.new" file. (I'm such a newbie, I'm not sure that is where to put the change...)

I still get the black screen which flashes grey for maybe 1/10 second about every four seconds. This occurs for about 10 minutes and then the system locks up and must be electrically reset.

I scanned all the relevant man pages I could find and found no references for the fragment "NoComposite". So, is there a new name for this option in 4.0? The xf86cfg man page mentions XFree86 4.0, so I presume that is the version I'm running with my OpenBSD 3.1 pristine CD install.

The files I posted at http://66.181.46.77/x11/  have error messages like this:

I can't make much sense of these messages.  I have reinstalled OpenBSD from the CD-ROM several times, so have a hard time believing some file is missing.  The identical install works on two older much-slower machines. (But who wants to develop on a 486 with a 640x480 peephole).
