Rob & et al...

My response was a request for help. Not a request to be told to go read the manual. I have already done that. I missed something or have something miss configured. The RTFM response is what prevents the acceptance of X and furtherance of these systems. You do not know that I have X up and running on FreeBSD with a Matrox card running the KDE desktop. Nor do you know that I have X up and running under Mandrake 8.0 with a SiS card ( no desktop over the top here). Now that I have successfully brought up X before you may be able to understand my response. Nor do you know that I am utilizing Apache with Jakatara to bridge over to MS-SQL. I am not exactly a newbie. Except this is where I thought I could find some insightful help.

When you reply with RTFM you lose people who are after a technical answer to a question, there is a bit of fustration that goes on. After spending 4 monthes trying to configure this Nvidia card to run X, after having spent time on ftp sites and in vim reading the manual I did not need RTFM. When you respond with RTFM you may want to consider who you think your intended audience is. It may be that the person has done the basic wonk work and needs some suggestions.

For an even better arguement of why RTFM is not a valid response I suggest that you take a look at the suggestions for Linux advocacy. The reasons are laid out there in a much more succulent manner than I ever can or will.

I have been running various systems for going on 10yrs now. Yes, most of them NT. I have a rock solid experience with said systems. I have also run X now for going on 4 yrs on various *nixes, mostly FreeBSD and Linux. These systems have not been as stable as the NT systems I have run.  Now that I have stated my creditionals, if anyone has some helpful suggestions other than RTFM, I will try them. I have exhausted my bag of tricks.

If anyone would like to continue this other thread, point me at a mail list/ chat server or even e-mail me and I will take it offline of this list.

My e-mail is nt_bert@yahoo.com . I am giving anyone permission who wishes to carry on an intellegent discussion on why or why not RTFM is a valid response to e-mail me, or for that matter any other technical point. I will answer as time permits.
