I'm not sure what exactly is your question.  It could be that either you 
are currenlty looking at an XFree86 X session and want to kill it and get 
back to a text console:
in that case pressing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace simultaneously would kill the X 
session.

Or you could mean that when your computer boots it automatically starts an 
X login session (managed by xdm, gdm or kdm):
in that case edit the file called "/etc/inittab".  This file will have a 
line 

id:5:initdefault:

Change that line to

id:3:initdefault:

Then any time that you want to start an X session type "startx".  These 
instructions are generally correct, but details may differ depending upon 
the GNU/Linux distribution that you are running.  Your best bet is to read 
the docs that came with your distro, then browse the HOWTOs at the Linux 
Documentation Project http://www.tldp.org.
