First off, unless you've originally complied the program under RHL 7.0 newer C/C++ compiler based on ANSI C, v. 2.96, all you should have to do is reinspect the source for proper/newer standards compliance and then recompile. RedHat abandoned the bleeding edge ELF binaries for the newer ANSI C/C++ standard to ensure cross-platform operation. Many of the 'bugs' stopping programs have minor flaws in the written source from shortcut you used to get away with, and can't any longer. Second, your 7.3 installation program allows you to install a 'classic' version of the X Windows system. Be sure this is selected as well as the regular X Windows option while doing a custom install just before you select packages. Also, make sure you select /all/ of the X servers which apply to your video card: e.g., Standard VGA, Monochrome, XFBdev, XFree86 Compatibility modules, SVGA, etc. or your /will/ be sorry. XFree86 4 and greater are backwards compatible, although you'll need to check your /etc/X11/XF86Config file to insure all is properly configured.
