The Linux Hardware Database suggests that the chipset is an S3 968 with
the RAMDAC TI 3026-175

The XFree86 "current drivers" information suggests that although the 968
is supported the RAMDAC may not be
(http://www.xfree86.org/current/Status28.html#28):

'Support (accelerated) for the [...], 968, [...] is provided by the "s3"
driver (however, only models using [...] Texas Instruments 3025 [...] are
supported)'

It may be that the TI-3026 is close enough to the 3025 and that you just
have a misconfiguration problem. You may want to check on the Xperts list
to confirm this. Your fall-back option would be to return to XFree86
3.3.6 which states that it does support the 968 with no caveat about the
RAMDAC.
