X won't start

I have a very strange problem.
I have two machines at home, one, a Celeron 400 with a TNT2 card, running Slackware. Everything runs fine.
The second is a Amd Athlon 900 with a GeForce3, running Slackware 8.1 as well. Using the same configuration, X freezes while starting. Ctrl+Alt+Del is the only way to go.
I replaced once the TNT2 with the Geforce (to see, whether the problem is due to the board itself), but the Celeron system ran fine with the GeForce.
The X-configurations of these systems are identical, so no problem should be there.
The log doesn't reveal any problem, however, it stops at the point: Setting mode "1024x768". I have a Samsung 19" Monitor, so this resolution isn't supposed to make any trouble.
I have also tried SuSE 8 but it leaves me with the same problem
My Motherboard is a QDI Kinetiz 7T (VIA KT133)
What could cause this problem?
Thanks a lot
