ATI Radeon 7500 -- RedHat 7.2 display woes

Hello,

I've just got a new notebook Compaq Presario 2811EA, P-4, 256mb ddr ram, with a ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 32mb AGP(LW) display card.
Installation of Redhat 7.2 was done alright. Driver for the display card was 'Generic Radeon'.
I was able to start kdm or xdm, but the display is all messed up, with vertical streaks running thru the entire length of the screen. I have tried all possible combination for resolutions/refresh rates with the same effect.

I have also tried changing "Driver 'radeon' to Driver 'vesa' "  in my XF86Config-4 file. This made my X login screen fine. But when I try logging in, it tries a couple of times with my screen blinking and finally exits back to the console.
I have XP as dual-boot, which works fine. Using Exceed , i can access my Linux X-display from other pc's, so the installation ,i figured is okay.

Someone, anyone..please Help!
thank you,
Dennis M.
