XFree86 and gnome

I installed the latest version of XFree86(4.2.0), but it seems that
when I installed it, some of my configuration files were overwritten
or replaced, and I think it made my default desktop manager twm
instead of Gnome. I tried running Xconfigurator, but the program seems
to crash on the first screen when I press 'OK', with the error message
"segmentation fault". With xf86config, I can change the monitor, video
card, mouse and keyboard, but not which desktop manager it should
load. How and where can I change this manually??
