4.x and Old hardware

I recently installed xfree86 4.2 on an OLD compaq laptop (because I have nothing better to do with my spare time apparently).

The system is a Compaq Elite LTE 4/75cx (if anybody cares) which uses the WD90c24 chipset.

I had previously had xfree86 3.3.6 working OK on this system using the SVGA server - 640 x 480 x 8 bpp

I've been using the vga driver for version 4.2. For a long time, I could only get it to display at 320x240 until I figured out that I had to set it
to 4bpp to get 640 by 480.

Is there any way for me to get 640 x 480 x 8 bpp on this machine? or do have to wait until someone makes a driver for it? (which will
probably never happen).

I've just been reading about fbdev. Will this help me?

Thanks for your time...
Colin
