The only line that made any sense to me as part of the problem was a warning line as follows; (WW) MGA(0): Failed to set up write-combining range (0xfc000000,0xe00000) I could not find any drivers marked old in the dir you listed, although there was an mga driver in this dir. VideoRam was not specified in the XF86Config-4 file, but seems to have been sensed at ~16Mb. Perhaps it is time for me to try the CVS thing.
