Just an aside...I have a similar problem, where I do Ctrl-Alt-F#, and get a 
new tty, then switch back, X server is [naturally] still running, but I'm in text 
mode.  No lock-up, I just cannot get the gui back.  I'm not too concerned 
with this right now, as I have much larger fish to fry, but yes, other folks 
have had/are having this problem.
