[Newbie]can't re-enter X 4.1.0 on FreeBSD 4.5

When I start X with kdm or startx it is fine, then if
I
C-A-Fn to another virtual terminal, ie, a command
line,
then C-A-F9 back to X the screen is always wrong -
sometimes just black, sometimes distorted to a greater
or lesser extent.

When I C-A-BS then restart it, everything is ok again,
but if I go through that cycle a few times it locks
the
machine and I can't even telnet in.
I can't see anything that looks like a problem in the
log
file - though I don't really know what I'm looking at.

I'm running XFree86 version 4.1.0 installed from the
FreeBSD 4.5-RELEASE port on an Azza 361bs m/b with
onboard graphics.

dmesg shows a 'Trident model 8500 VGA-compatible
display device'.
/var/log/XFree86.0.log shows a Trident CyberBlade/i1
rev 0

Any help would be appreciated. I can supply the log
file,
config, etc, if it would be useful.
           TIA, mickfp.
