Ok, I'll try :)
The SDL problem is the most simple to test and describe.

First of all, do you know that black/dark space between the screen and the end
of the monitor (the are between the max you can see in X and the end of the
glass and start of the plastic in monitor)? I'll call that the
black_nonused_area.
If I run a SDL app in window mode, change window focus to another X app
(dosen't matter whitch one) and then return the focus to the SDL app window,
the black_nonused_area gets colored! usually pink or orange!
Now if I move the SDL window to the black_nonused_area or outside of monitor
visible area.... freeze :) (I can do ir every time, always happen).

The fullscreen... well happens when I run mplayer in xvideo VO (video output,
a option of mplayer) or SDL and press F to change to fullscreen... can you
imagine what happens? Yes system freeze!

Another problem:
If I run mplayer with any video output other than x11 some parts of
graphics/colors on X gets colored, usually green, like that psicodelic
problem that happens with the 4.2 driver, but this dosen't happen on all
screen. But indeed, needs a reboot to colors get normal again (this looks
like it messes with video board memory...).
If I run xine, I get the full pink-psicodelic effect again, even that I'm
using your new driver.

Hope that helps to find the problems to fix the trident driver for XFree 4.2.1
or sooner :)
If you need tests, I'm welcome to help.
Thanks in advance.
