I managed to get it going through vesa fb dev in the kernel it's a little 
sloppy.

But it's ok for now. Just recompile the kernel with fbdev with vesa supp 
vga=-3 (Option for lilo) and enter 313 after showing modes, and you've got 
(with a little overhead) 800*600 16 bits. 

Edit /etc/X11/XF86Config device setction fbdev.. All ok let's play...

btw It's a very sloppy descr. it's just an idea if you like I am happy to 
give more pointers  (it took me 3 weeks to figure all this out ;-( (but I 
learned a lot...).
