Sorry for not having followed up but I don't know nvidia cards and drivers.
I won't be able to help you with point 1 either because I am not sure where FreeBSD does it's call
to the desktop (in RH 7.x it's in .Clients -or more exactly in the file pointed to by .Clients I
don't have the exact name because I am not on my mobo...- It can also be in .xinitrc -I hope my
memory is OK as to the spelling. Alzeimer you know...
As to point 2. X is very likely using 640x480 which is usually bad news because in most cases it
means that the card has not been recognised and that the vga (dumb) driver is being used...
I do think posting both your XF86Config and the log would help...
