Does this mean I don't need to install the NVIDIA driver if I am using
XFree86 4.2.0?

I am having a very hard time getting my system to work with X. I have a
Gateway Flat Panel with DVI, the NVIDIA GeForce2 MX400, and Red Hat 7.2.
I've tried the X that comes with Red Hat, just get snow or the power save
mode. Then I tried adding the NVIDIA driver, just get horizontal text lines
like underscores and dashes. Then I tried installing XFree86 4.2.0, can only
get a very dark blue X looking screen with wierd screen positioning, teeny
hard to read strange fonts, and a jumpy mouse if I use 1280x1024 and install
things exactly in the order of Red Hat (with X 4.1.0) then the NVIDIA driver
and then XFree86 4.2.0. If I omit the X that comes with Red Hat or the
NVIDIA driver or try different resolutions then all I get is snow or power
save.

Any help you can provide is much appreciated. I've tried both the NVIDIA and
XFree86 forums with no response.

Thanks,
Helen
