I know this might be a dead horse by now, but I've struggled with this for a while: I'm (trying to) run XFree86 4.2.0 on a FreeBSD 4.5 box with an Intel chip. The error I get when I run X (via X, XFree86, or startx) is: Fatal server errror: could not open default font 'fixed' This is the ONLY error that I receive. (Before it is the config file name and after it is just the bug report message.) I've tried many different solutions, such as ones suggesting that I run mkfontdir on each font directory. (The fonts.dir files were there, and reasonable, already anyway.) I've tried removing fonts.alias files as one recommendation said. I've also recompiled X overnight a couple of times, and it compiles and installs perfectly, fonts and all. I've also run 'XFree86 -configure' and 'XFree86 -xf86config XF86Config.new', with both of those behaving well. I've also run xf86config and it seemed to work well. I know my hardware specs, so I doubt it is a problem with not specifying a device or hardware option properly. Let me know what might be the problem (i.e. whatever is left that I have not tried).
