[Newbie]Enabling DRI in XFree86 4.2.0 for ATI Radeon Mobility

I had basically the same experience on Red Hat 7.2.

I found this site and downloaded the binary Radeon drivers.

http://dri.sourceforge.net/download.phtml

No manual installation is involved, the script does everything.

These binary packages are updated from the CVS trunk every night with
the latest stable code.

I installed Mandrake 8.2 on my laptop (IBM Thinkpad A30) yesterday. It comes

improvement over MDK 8.1 with XF86 4.1.0) except for DRI. Everything in my
log looks good, it appears to load the required modules, enable hardware
acceleration, etc. but then it suddenly says that direct rendering is
    disabled with no explanation.
