Your point is well taken.  I AM dealing with a legacy embedded product that is pre-4.15.  I agree with your
position and will get my linux support team to look into patching the generator.

Oh, you're thinking of the *ancient* kernel thing? That got removed in kernel 4.15, and even the old 4.14 longterm is now EOL...

I'd say we don't really need to support that upstream this many years later.
