Ok, thanks - will look at that documentation page, and, FWIW, I'm working
with XAMPP 1.7.4, or thereabouts, which then includes/allows you to turn
on xdebug 2.1.0.4, and main thing is while now see it's offerring
better/more detailed error handling information on pages, the remote
debugging is what think might help more.

I'm using XAMPP 1.8.2 which comes with Xdebug 2.2.3 and that works fine.
 The remote debugging feature that you're looking for is documented on
<http://xdebug.org/docs/remote>; there is also a list of known clients.
