Thanks everybody, especially Praveen and James. After checking for hidden file extension, and modifying my path and still not having the working test.php program, I checked the error log. The book I am reading from, tells me to put the following line in my php.ini file extension=php_mysqli.dll And I did it. My PHP was trying to load this module and was not finding it. It caused all the problems. So everybody, if you are following Welling and Tho9mson book, ignore the above mentioned line. And your first program will work fine.
