I feel I need to stand up for Java a little here. Java itself it not particularly slow. Lagginess in GUI applications is often more the fault of developers who don't understand threading and the Java AWT event-dispatch/repainting scheme, who block the GUI and create apps that appear slow or prone to freezes.
