I fell sorry for our OP having to run IE8! My dear OP, can you not get away with User Agent Switcher spoofing Mac-native FireFox to look like IE? Or what about FireFox running in WINE? The latter will also appear to be coming from Windows.
The only half-way legitimate use for running IE that I can think of is web site makers testing their websites' compatibility with IE because so many people use it. That's actually a back-door illegitimate reason because the only reason why they have to do that is because of people using IE who themselves have no legitimate reason to be using IE.
If you like IE, sorry that I offended you. That said, IE is historically slow, insecure, and actually harms the Internet. It harms the Internet because web site makers have to limit their websites to the limitations of IE to be compatible with IE surfers. If they only had to worry about FireFox compatibility, they could do much more and quicker. I'm not a web developer, but I've heard their gripes.
>From what I recall, winetricks does successfully install an operable IE7.

Have you managed to find a website that truly NEEDS Internet Explorer? If so, I would like a link to try myself.

Cheers,
Jake
