AVRDUDE has a patch to use pickit 2 as an avr programmer. Without the switch. Switch is just so you don't have fun on windows. Basically pickit 2 is a good starting point allowing you to mess with both avr and pic from linux after apply a third party patch to avrdude. Nothing like getting the most out your programmer hardware.
