You should assume the opposite: graphics drivers themselves are usually much more buggy than Wine itself, which tends to use the graphics APIs as they should be used.

You could try turning off Compiz before anything else, that can sometimes lock up things in combination with Wine. You could also try getting the latest version of your graphics drivers from the ATI site if you haven't done so already, they try to fix the most severe crashes in those.
