I feel sorry for you, using the word "playonlinux" is a death sentence here. I tried Steam install/launch with both POL and "simple" wine (from deb testing repo), they both work good, no connexion problems, no crash, nothing wrong to report. connect/work faster with POL anyway since it use wine 1.3.9...Probably some improvement with steam in unstable branch.
