ATI provide better Linux support but much worse than NVidia. In future before buying a computer/laptop make sure that it has NVidia GPU. In my experience Nvidia video cards work better in both Linux and Windows, and NVidia Linux drivers are of high-quality, suitable for both gaming and professional applications. I know this isn't an answer you will like because it is basically means you either have to buy better laptop or use dual-boot more often, but unfortunatelly it's just the way it is - this isn't a fault of Wine Project.
