I've tried ALSA, OSS and JACK so far. Pulseaudio is completely removed from my system. Is there anything I can do, and could it just be the mic? Well, it might not be feasible, but you might want to upgrade to ubuntu Lucid (10.04) just to get more recent video/audio drivers. Also, disabling desktop effects before playing can help reduce a # of perf problems.
