run glxinfo | grep "direct rendering" in the terminal that will either say yes or no for direct rendering and if im not mistaken dxdiag only gets installed if u install directX and have the operating system set to windows 2000
also another thing u can try is to make a new wine prefix and install only cod4 into it so we can see if its a wine configuration problem(such as messed up directX install) (run mv .wine .wine-old and then winecfg or wineprefixcreate, and then to get all your wine stuff back and revert afterwards just run rm -Rf .wine then mv .wine-old .wine) if cod4 works in the clean prefix then you can just a make  a more perminet prefix for it. and as the other guy said you should  use winetricks (http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks) to install directX although i would try running cod4 without it first.
