After uninstalling and reinstalling, no Wine folders

Originally installed Wine [9.33] from the Ubuntu repository. After
adding the WineHQ repository, I was upgraded to 9.49. Since it was an
upgrade, the folders installed by 9.33 were retained in place of those
9.49 would have installed if it were the first installation.

I decided to make my installation more "up-to-date" by uninstalling and
reinstalling. I've uninstalled and reinstalled twice now, and each time
the only thing in the /.wine folder is two registry files -- no Windows
folders, no drive-c. Of course, when I try to run Wine, it fails. What's
going on? What can I do?

On inspecting the registry files, it appears that Wine installed, or
attempted to install, Windows NT. I don't want NT. I want 98, since that
is what the applications I want to install ran in on my Windows system.
Again, what's going on? What can I do?

Thanks,
