Aha, you can get a good version right from MS.
http://activex.microsoft.com/controls/vc/mfc42.cab
This is a cab file, so you need the program cabextract to unpack it.
That unpacks into an executable, mfc42.exe. Run that under Wine, and it
installs mfc42.dll in the correct place.
With that version of mfc42.dll, I was able to install iview399, and it
at least runs.
