Executing shortcut (.lnk) files?

Is it possible to execute a program using the shortcut files (aka .lnk) that are generated for the Start Menu et. al? I realize that many linux distros populate the Gnome and/or KDE menu automatically, but it would be nice to be able to launch a shortcut from the command-line. Is that currently possible, or does some parser need to be created?

Thanks,
- Dave
