Using an image instead of a CD

Playing the game "Settlers of Catan" under Wine forces me to keep the
CDROM mounted all the time. Thus the CDROM can't be used for other things.

So I came up with the idea to convert the CD to an image and mount that
image instead. Telling Wine to use a mounted image as a CDROM works
quite well, but there's the copy protection (ProtectCD) that makes
trouble. Simply using commands like "dd" or "cdread" to create the image
doesn't work: i can mount the image but the game doesn't recognize the
CD because the copy protection is missing.

Does anyone know how to convert a CD into an image including the copy
protection?

I do not want to make illegal copies, I just want to keep the CDROM
unblocked while playing. Besides: it is much more convenient if you
don't have to mount the CD every time you want to play the game.
