That must have been it. I started the system up today and now it sees wineoss and runs.
However, winealsa is broken. I guess I'll bug it.
I can't confirm that - for me, winealsa (Wine 20040121, alsa 1.0.2c) works. I'm just listening to Van Morrison via windows cdplayer ...
